Dark Awakening is NOW available at Amazon!

Amazon added a new category back in June called Kindle Worlds, where people can do stories based on a small select group of existing works.  It seemed like doing a story in one of these categories might get my works more visibility than doing totally original stories where the story ends up being just one of millions available on Amazon.

Of the currently available categories in Kindle Worlds, the one I was most familiar with and that I found interesting enough to try a story was Vampire Diaries.  Tons of people are doing your typical Elena/Stefan/Damon stories and I wanted to try something a little different.  And setting it in present day might quickly feel dated as the storyline on the TV show would doubtlessly head in some unforeseen direction.  So I decided maybe something set in the distant past would work better.  I have done a number of things set in the distant past before, but they have mostly been time-travel stories where you have a contemporary protagonist which allows you to mix in modern references.  Therefore setting a story entirely in the past presented some interesting writing challenges.

Way back in the first or second season of the TV show, they did a flashback of Katerina becoming a vampire in 1492.  But then they never told much of her story until she shows up in Mystic Falls in 1864.  So there seemed to be potential for many stories in that nearly 400 year span.  I decided I might as well start at the very beginning, so this story starts on the night Katerina is turned and then covers her life over roughly the next three weeks.

I tweaked the basic story just a little to make this story work better.  In this story, Katerina is not yet the dark character she will be on her arrival in Mystic Falls.  I pictured her being much closer to Elena in personality when she was first turned and it was only over the following centuries that her life as a vampire turned her dark.  So when she killed herself in the cabin, she really expected to die and never expected to awake up as a vampire.

And, at least in the beginning, Katerina discovered being a vampire was not a glorious existence.  It was hard and she was forced to do terrible things to survive she never would have dreamed she could do when she had still been human.  Plus, since she was running for her life from the moment she awoke, no one had explained any of the strengths or weakness of being a vampire and she was forced to figure them out as she went along.  Slowly, she learned how to cope and even thrive until she was once again sucked into a world of dark magic and demonic powers.

I think this story stands on its own and can be read and enjoyed even if you have never seen an episode of the TV series.

  1. I bet this is good, Duane. My question though is does Katarina H2Oski? Your friend – me

    • Does she waterski? Well, not in this story which takes place in the year 1492. But it is possible in some future story.

At this point everything I have written totals over 3000 pages and I don’t believe I have ever had a waterskiing scene. However, if you read ‘Chuck vs LuthorCorp, the 2nd chapter takes place in a stained glass store. Is that worth half a brownie point?
